Akoya Pearl City - Beihai (Part 1)
Beihai is located south of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, east coast gulf area. The excellent natural environment has bred Beihai's pearl market.
Beihai's pearl production has benefited from a long 1800-year history. As early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, Beihai's pearl industry was extremely prosperous. To commemorate this prosperous history, the famous historical literary reference “return of a lost pearl”, originated here. Presently, the Hepu territory is governed by Beihai city. Hepu, a centralized barrack town pearl farm, the main pearl source area, has now expanded along the coastline to the Beihai city.
During ancient times, Hepu pearls were wild and natural. Past Hepu state-operated pearl farms have given way to Beihai’s pearl cultivation counting on hundreds of individual households to deliver the area’s pearl production. Every year Beihai’s pearl production output may reach as high as about 5000 kilograms.
Beihai is a major tourist city in the area, and their beautiful pearl products are very popular with tourists. In fact, a large majority Beihai’s domestic pearl production, are sold to the tourist market.
Walking in Beihai, one can find a large amount of pearl product advertisement everywhere. In order to support pearl market growth and development, Beihai has an unusual preferential benefit tax: For each water acre surface of cultivation, Chinese pearl farmers pay a 20-Yuan tax every year. This municipal policy has provided immense industry support, and aroused community pearl cultivation enthusiasm.
Beihai’s pearl competition comes mainly from Japan. After Japan purchases raw Beihai pearls, processes the pearls into many different products, Japan sells the products to the international market, including China. Thus, the Japanese pearl products containing Beihai pearls compete with the fresh Beihai pearl farm production.
